I'm not taking anything away from Henry, she's a remarkable athlete.
I'm just highlighting the fact that we won't see Schipper gracing our breakfast cereal anytime soon.
It is an indictment on society AND swimming and corporate Australia. I don't think amateur sports should get too close to the corporate world. All the corporates care about is brand image- not about developing athletes or helping people lead a healthier life.
I also feel that it sends a bad message about what it means to be healthy, and to be strong. I think a lot of people get dispirited because they think I don't look like Ian Thorpe or Jodie Henry- so therefore I can't be an athlete, or aspire to leading a healthy lifestyle. I can't possibly be like them so why bother.
Sure many people will be inspired, but I think more are disheartened.
