Melbourne World Cup 2010

I don't know about you guys but I have mixed feelings about Melbourne winning the 2010 Cycling World Cup.

Obviously it's great that we have won the hosting rights, and it will be great to go and watch the race.

However, I have mixed feelings about the Geelong course. It's isn't that difficult as the women's worldcup rounds have shown. Also, it doesn't really showcase the best cycling Melbourne has to offer. Surely the best course from a spectators and difficulty perspective would be one that included the Dandenong and Kinglake Ranges.

This would be more disrputive to the broader community, but it would take the race to the people. The main thing though is that it would show people where cyclists hang out in Melbourne.

I would want a course like the tour of Flanders- Start in the centre of Melbourne, run down Beach Road to Mordialluc, go over the Dandenongs, then Kinglake and then finish the race either at the top of Kinglake, or then somewhere like Winchelsea- so you take in one big loop.

That would be a trully epic race that took in the best Melbourne has to offer in terms of riding and scenary, and would show the broader public what cycling in Melbourne is all about.

What do you think?

I kinda agree regarding geelong. However the course should be a circuit not a road race out to king lake and back.

I personally thought it was a shame that Australia won these rights. From a selfish point of view its good that I will get to see it and it will help cycling in Australia.

But the reality to me is that not many spectators will watch and the event will lose the atmosphere that it would get in other places. This could have been lessoned by having an 10km inner city Melbourne/Sydney/Adelaide circuit... but Geelong... I don't think it will work.

1. It's the frikkin' world championships, not a world cup.

2. It has to be a circuit. World Champs is always a circuit. This is also better for spectators.

3. Said circuit would ideally be located close enough to the city and public transport to allow easy access for cycling fans.

I think the old nat's course around Warrandyte would be ideal (Kangaroo Ground Warrandyte Rd-->Main Rd-->Research Warrandyte Rd). It is fairly close to the Eltham train line and buses to Warrandyte. It is a challenging course and showcases some really beautiful scenery. It is close enough to the city to pull a real crowd. Hardcore fans will drive to Geelong, but will the mildly interested?

Can we lobby to change the course?

The TT course is OK... but it could be better too... I like a challenging TT for the Worlds. I mean, it's the Worlds!
